Thank You for 40 Wonderful Years!

In The Beginning

Vince & Joe’s Gourmet Market, a family-owned business, started in 1983 by Vince and Mimma Vitale and Joe and Maria Vitale. Their dream started small, as most dreams do: To provide for their growing families, to build a business they could be proud of and to offer a valuable service to the people in the community. It was Mimma Vitale who was shopping a local fruit market when she came up with the idea to open her own market. Mimma grew up watching the hard work of her Grandpa and Uncle who owned Manzella’s Fruit Market on Harper in St. Clair Shores. She was familiar with the long hours needed to own and run a successful produce store, but this did not sway her.

Mimma’s husband Vince, who was in the construction business, thought she was crazy when he heard the idea of opening a market. However, he came around and him and his brother Joe took on the challenge to build and open a new store. With no start up money, they decided to build on a current piece of land they owned in Clinton Township on Garfield and Canal Roads. Vince & Joe’s Gourmet Market opened on November 28, 1983.

As a small market Vince & Joe’s offered fresh fruits and vegetables and was competitive with the local grocery stores with items like milk and eggs, and specialized in Italian favorites. Vince and Joe both learned the task of going to Detroit and to Eastern Market, meeting with the local farmers to pick out the very best produce. Over time products like oils, breads, deli meats and cheeses were added always keeping competitive pricing along with the best quality products in mind. Having items like fresh grated Parmesan cheese and fresh Mozzarella cheese, along with fresh deli meats and pop for lunches, made Vince & Joe’s a hit with the local community.

As We Grew

By the 1990s Vince & Joe’s added bulk items to their product list and soon outgrew its footprint forcing a renovation in 1999. With the support of the surrounding community Vince & Joe’s began to really focus on the customer’s needs adding prepared foods to the product list and outside catering. By 2005 Vince & Joe’s was ready to add a second location in Shelby Township opening a beautiful 65,000 square foot store at Van Dyke and 25 Mile Road.

Over the years we have been thrilled to win awards in the Best of Detroit Hour Magazine, including BEST Gourmet Market, BEST Caterer, BEST Butcher Shoppe, and many others. It’s an honor to be recognized by our customers and a testament to the hard work and continued commitment to exceptional selection, premium quality and customer service shared by our families and our many outstanding employees, as well as our excellent network of vendors and suppliers. It’s a tremendous source of pride and the foundation of the successful business which we are able to pass along to the second generation.

Always Giving Back

Always Giving Back

Vince & Joe’s community commitment remains a pillar of our business model with thousands of dollars raised through various fundraisers each year. We continue our long-time partnership in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, ALSAC, with numerous events which benefit this wonderful mission and facility for families most in need. As of 2023 Vince & Joe’s has donated over $150,000 to St. Jude’s in support of St. Jude’s extraordinary mission of research, treatment and prevention of pediatric catastrophic diseases.

Through the sales of Vince & Joe’s house-made pasta sauces called Emma’s Hope, we have raised more than $50,000 for Hope Network, one of Michigan’s largest nonprofits that supports autism services. The sauces honor Emma, who is the 13-year-old granddaughter of founder and co-owner, Joe Vitale.

Each October Vince & Joe’s supports Team Angels Foundation’s efforts in Breast Cancer research, awareness and helping those affected by cancer. During October donations are collected at both stores. This donation is on behalf of all Vince and Joe’s customers who give so generously. Since 2005 Vince & Joe’s donated more than $37,000.

Vince & Joe’s support to help passionate students at the Macomb Culinary Arts Institute achieve their dreams remains unwavering with two annual $1,000 scholarships awarded to qualified students. In addition, we are proud Silver sponsors of the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts and Lorenzo Cultural Center as well as various community and school programs throughout the year. These programs represent our heartfelt gratitude to our community.
